'Artemis, be with me now,' I whispered to myself, my tongue dry and leaden.
I opened my stinging eyes slowly. The brightness of the room pierced through me. I was confined to an area of pure, porcelain white and baby blue, on the walls, on the cot, and on the woman standing before me.
This was not Rome.
I almost wished I had stayed in Vietnam.
Even with the sporadic, unpredictable gunshots, there was some sort of safety. There was a promise in being within a platoon, the knowledge we were all stuck in the mess together. And in both war and peace, we had each other. Even through the fear of combat and the paranoia of tranquility, there was always the tacit understanding that your squad was there to catch you if you fell.
But then the war ended.
